Introduction

The Enterprise encounters a derelict space ship, launched from Earth in the 1990s.  Aboard they discover a group of people in suspended animation, among them Khan Singh, a violent and powerful tyrant from Earth's past. Now aboard the Enterprise, will Khan try to reestablish his empire?  Will Captain Kirk be able to stop him if he does?

Matt and I both gave this a 4, for a total of 8. This was a really good story with some really good acting. One guest character who suffers from some terrible writing and some terrible sexual politics is all that holds this one back from a 5.  But still, this one is great to watch, and its clear why this story line got brought back for one of the movies. Enjoy the podcast everyone.

  1. I have a theory as to why Khan is wearing a Star Fleet uniform. We're not shown his plan to take over the ship until it takes effect, but what if he replicated/McGivers procured a uniform for him and he intended to infiltrate the crew. It would be easier to get loyal followers and he wouldn't have to threaten them. They would think he was one of them, join him, and there'd be a mutiny if all went to his design. But then he tried to leave his cabin and the guard was there, prompting Kirk to come talk to him, whereby we see him in the uniform without explanation because of time constraints. I don't know if there is an official explanation of the uniform, but that's my theory.

Also, what do you think of the usage of Khan's crew in the episode? I know 72 people is a lot, but it seems to me that they were under utilized. Only a handful appeared to do anything/be awakened that we saw on screen.

    I think it's a pity this wasn't a two-part episode.

(And as a comment on Into Darkness: This episode really shows that Khan couldn't design weapons, especially weapons that were much more advanced than current designers. Neither he nor his crew could handle the Enterprise without the Enterprise's crew - despite studying the technical manuals.)
